Takeaway: If one of your geek hobbies is stargazing and reading about celestial events, you’ll want to check out these 14 blogs and one podcast.

I think perhaps the best thing to come from the blogosphere is the ability to learn more about hobbies and interests and connect with others who enjoy the same things. Astronomy blogs offer astronomy buffs the ability to learn about celestial events that they may otherwise have little chance of experiencing or discussing with interesting people from around the globe. Here is our list to take your astronomy hobby from the atmosphere to the blogosphere.
  1. NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day features a new picture or video of the skies on a daily basis.
  2. Bad Astronomy breaks down news and information into easily accessible terms that even the newest of astronomy n00bs can understand.

Blogging For Profits/Hobby Ideas

Hobby Blogs: Making Profits from your Hobby

In this post Kevin Sanders shares some introductory reasons to take a hobby and blog about it. In effect this is the way that I personally got into blogging – there was no intent of my blogs being anything more than hobbies in my early days – but out of writing about things I was passionate about emerged a business…. Now it’s over to Kevin….

I’ve been going to the gym for about twenty years. I’m not a professional bodybuilder or fitness instructor – lifting weights is just a hobby of mine. But I’ve learned a lot over the years, and I’ve even trained some of my friends. I often give (free) advice about exercise, diet and supplements.
I asked myself this question about ten months ago: Why haven’t I created a fitness blog? I loved the topic, and I already knew the basics of blogging.

Photo by Jessica WalliserBeneficial-insect seed mixes, such as this one, beautify your farm while nurturing the good bugs that keep pests away from your crops.

If you have any extra room to grow on your farm, consider filling it with plants that naturally support beneficial insects. Ladybugs, lacewings, parasitic wasps and thousands of other species of beneficial predatory insects help control pests on the farm, and encouraging them is always a good idea. My own landscape is filled with plants that are known to attract and support these good bugs. If you don't have time to sort through lists of flowering plants that will support beneficial insects, turn instead to commercial seed blends designed to do the same.

Beneficial-insect seed mixes consist of a collection of plants intended to support a diversity of beneficials throughout the year. Some of the mixes comprise annuals only, while others include perennials, groundcovers and even grasses. Most of the plant species used in the blends are not only useful to your good bugs, they’re also beautiful. You can plant them on field edges, fence rows, or in strips between crop rows. Anywhere will do.
At North Carolina State University in 2003, several different seed blends were compared for seed purity, as well as for their beneficial-insect-luring prowess. Good Bug Blend from Peaceful Valley Farm Supply was found to host the highest population of parasitoids and predators.

In addition to this seed collection, there are a handful of others on the market, including several region-specific blends, with some even tailored for growth height and intended use. Rincon-Vitova Insectary in Ventura, Calif., has a number of available seed blends, including Beneficial Blend Seed Mix, Insecta-Flora (also available in a low-growing mix), and Interflora (a blend specifically created to be part of vegetable intercropping). Arbico Organics carries Good Bug Flowering Beneficial Insect Habitat, Johnny's Selected Seeds has Beneficial Insect Attractant Mix, and Gurney's provides a mix named Beneficial Bug Blend.

And this is just a small sampling of the seed blends intended to promote and support numerous beneficial insects. Using one of these seed mixes might lead to a better, longer life for your beneficial insects, and it will make your farm a more beautiful place!

Fun Craft Ideas for Toddlers/Hobby Ideas

Rainy Day Activity Ideas that Spark the Imagination

Toddlers are very active and hardly like to sit still. Every parent knows the boredom that often sets in on a rainy day. If you are looking for a fun and exciting way to spend quality time with your children or to keep them occupied, then check out a few of the following craft ideas for toddlers and older children mentioned below.

Making animals out of different materials is a fun and exciting way to educate your children and spark their creativity. A few examples of these activities could include making a rice duck or a feathered bird. To make a rice duck, you will need rice and orange colored yarn. Parents can cut out a duck on regular or construction paper. If you place glue all of over the duck's body, your toddler can pour the rice over the glue. You can later use the yarn for the ducks beak or feet. If your child would enjoy making a more colorful duck, you can substitute the orange yarn for another color.

Another project that is closely related to the one above involves making a featured bird. For this project you will need a bird cutout or you can make your own. Feathers will also be needed. Different sized and colored feathers can often be purchased at local craft stores for a fairly low price. Once you finish cutting the shape the bird, let your toddler glue the different colored feathers on. The final result will be a colorful bird that is sure to bring a smile to your child's face.

Manly Hobbies/The Manly Man

A Manly Mans honor will traditionally consist of having a reputation judged worthy of respect and admiration by a group of equal peers who share the same codes and standards. His honor has become a concept almost entirely synonymous with personal integrity and is more powerful than all the rules and laws of the land in shaping the human behavior of the manly man. In earlier

times, these standards were based on strength, courage, determination, and dedication and they still hold true to this day. At an individual level, masculinity refers to how successfully a person conforms to the social expectations for the man, and at broader levels it denotes how successful structures and practices preserve the gender order in which men predominate and the cultural attributes of manliness hold sway.
